At the end of each term we always have to say goodbye to someone. Clara, Markus and Cindy left to go back to their homes and families. This group went off to the South Island to do a tour which just happened to be on the same flight to Auckland that Cindy was leaving on.

Sadly it was time to say good bye to these lovely students.
They all graduated and were given certificates from The Principal Mrs Forgie,Mrs Autet and Mrs Jenkins. Happy travels and we hope to see you back at school one day in the future.

Kapa Haka

Three International students are part of the school's Kapa Haka group. They are practising hard for a big competition tomorrow. It is a huge achievment for these girls who have acomplished such a high standard in the short time they have been here, enough to be invited to compete with the group in these big competitions. Our two lovely girls Clara and Katharina enjoy horse riding out at Kate's Riding School as part of the Academic plus program offered at Kerikeri High School.
Looks like great fun girls, love the big smiles.

Academic + Golf

On Fridays some of our students go off to learn and play golf. Here is Nunee, Yuki and Risa along with their coach Aaron playing at Kerikeri Golf course on another gorgeous sunny Kerikeri day. Great shots girls!

The Cream Boat Trip

On Saturday we got up early and went for an all day boat cruise around the Bay of Islands. It was another stunning sunny day. We saw so many dolphins! They were leaping out of the water and surfing in the wake of the boat. It was a great day.

Thai Potluck dinner

We started the evening with lots of yummy food to eat,then BJ the Magician did some magic! He was brilliant. To finish the evening the Thai students sang a song to all the host families.

A Visit to Kerikeri's History

We did a lot of walking! But we had a beautiful sunny day and a lot of fun. We learnt about the history of Kerikeri which has the 2 oldest buildings in New Zealand; the Stone store and the mission house. Then we went onto a Maori Pa and saw how the Maori used to live before the Europeans came.

Yesterday a group of 20 Thai students from Teeratada School came to spend a month with us. This morning they met their kiwi buddies and attended a Powhiri. :)

Haere Ra

It has been a whirlwind term for everybody, and as it reaches an end we have some special goodbyes. Bon Voyage and Keep in Touch to Elisa and Julie who are returning home this term, and a safe journey for our 21 visiting students from Teeratada, who have accomplished so much during their brief stay in Kerikeri. We hope to see all of you again someday in the future!

Congratulations to Karen who was selected as one of only 25 students in Northland to participate in the Culinary Institute of New Zealand's workshop!

Also congrats to Anton and Frederik who competed this weekend in the Mistrals Jubilee Regatta in Auckland, both of them earning first place in the Non-spinnaker Division and Anton also taking home the first place award for Skipper in the 17 and under category! Well done!

Sailing Academy meets Teeratada

It was a beautiful day for sailing last week at Lake Manuwai. Working towards achieving their Instructors' Certificates, our Sailing Academy students did an excellent job showing the Teeratada students the ropes (or should we say sheets), and the Thai students learned quickly under the tutelage of their patient instructors. In Optimists, Plastics, and Sunbursts, the Academy students taught the basics of water safety, rigging, and dinghy sailing, and by lunchtime the Thai students were participating in Match Races and cruises around the lake. Above are just a few pictures of the fun-filled day, and below are some entertaining videos of the instructors in action.

It seems that every day our International students find new opportunities to achieve great things during their stay in New Zealand. Here are some of our most recent congratulations:

To Elisa, who was chosen for the third time as a Leading Hand on the Spirit of New Zealand Voyage, Congratulations!

To Marie, who placed first in one of her swimming races at the Northland Secondary Schools' Sports Association Championships, Well Done!

To Johann, who represented KKHS in Tennis at the Northland Secondary Schools' Sports Association Championships and in Hockey at the Western Heights Invitational Tournament in Rotorua, Great Job!

To Vittorio who earned 2nd place with the KKHS Sailing Squad at the 420s Upper North Island Teams Race Championships, Good on you!

Our new group of International students from the Teeratada school in Phitsanulok Thailand were officially welcomed to Kerikeri High School on Monday at the powhiri. Their principal, Mrs. Wanla Santipada, offered a speech on their behalf, and the students sang a beautiful waiata in English and Thai and then another in Maori. While the kapa haka group showed the Thai students the hongi, the Thai students demonstrated their own traditional bow and greeting.

A wonderful welcome and cultural exchange for all!

After a week of rainy postponements, our new group of International Students were officially welcomed to Kerikeri High School at the Powhiri ceremony on Monday, along with all new teachers, students, and staff.

The moving performance of the Kapa Haka group, the skilled oration of our Kaumatua Mr. Kemp, and the heartfelt words of our principal Mrs. Forgie made for an outstanding welcome that was well worth the wait. Following tradition, Johann from Germany spoke on behalf of our new group of International students, and all the new Internationals sang the waiata that Yuki and Arisa from Japan had shared with us at orientation. Like the Maori carvings on our school's whare, the Powhiri reminded us to welcome diversity and to work together, united towards common goals, lessons particularly poignant for all of us who have come so far to learn about new cultures. Only in New Zealand could such a special welcome be possible!

1. You can save any photos that are posted here by right clicking the image and clicking "save", but if you'd like a larger image, click the photo first to open it in its own page, and then save it.

2. If you'd like to have the video clips, leave a comment here to let Cristina know, as Blogger will not allow video saving from this blog.

3. These videos and more pictures will be on our new Facebook group account soon, which will make sharing easier...so stay tuned!!

Post-Potluck Performances

After dinner the students entertained the host-families and staff with some lovely performances blending kiwi creativity and international flair!

Here are some pictures of the girls' group practicing their newly learned Dutch song, led by Maud from the Netherlands, and the boys' group synchronizing their super-secret dance moves.

Meanwhile, the host families wait patiently in anticipation for the show to begin!

The performances! Each group did a fabulous job presenting their newly learned routines and then singing their rendition of the Japanese waiata. How do you think they did?

Potluck Dinner

Thanks to everyone for making our international potluck dinner such a success!
